Blood drive set July 10

Newkirk’s first responders are looking for citizens to support their efforts through blood donation with Oklahoma Blood Institute. Those who give at the Boots & Badges blood drive on Friday, July 10 will provide blood needed to save local lives, such as those that firefighters and law enforcement officers save every day.

PCDA unveils project

In response to Covid-19 social distancing practices, Ponca City Development Authority (PCDA) has accelerated several community workforce retention and attraction projects. Starting with a series of videos thanking our Ponca City community and essential workers, a paint by numbers community mural on the south wall of City Central and now, set to be unveiled in late July, is Central Fare, an outdoor food court and seating area.

Bridge project scheduled

Northbound and southbound I-35 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction between US-60 (mm 214) near Tonkawa and SH-15 (mm 203) in Kay County starting at 8 a.m. Monday, June 29, until further notice for bridge rehabilitation work over the Salt Fork Arkansas River. Drivers should plan ahead for extra travel time in this corridor throughout the year-long project.

Social Security and You .

As regular readers of this column know, every once in a while, I try to squeeze as many questions and answers as I can into one column. And several weeks ago, I did just that. But I knew ahead of time it would cause problems. Why? Because there can be so many “ifs ands or buts” associated with Social Security’s rules. And when I try to keep my answers short and sweet … well, they may be short, but they are not always so sweet. I simply cannot cover all the variables that may pop up, and I can’t explain all the nuances to any given Social Security situation.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the government’s power to arrest, question and quickly remove immigrants who are caught crossing the border illegally.By a 7-2 vote, the justices rejected the claim that immigrants who seek asylum have a right to a full federal court review through a writ of habeas corpus, even if their claims are judged to be not credible.
